What do you do when a peace officer is serving a search warrant on your premises, your house, or your car?

The first thing to do is take a deep breath and calm yourself down as much as you can. One trick is to count to ten before you let yourself say anything to anyone other than your counsel.

Once you have taken that breath, you'll want ask the peace officer if you can contact your lawyer. Why? Because it is really hard to step back and be objective when you're under the stress of being detained or in the custody of the police. And no one that I know, including myself, can maintain that objectivity -- and I am a former prosecutor.
